Alicia Keys was born Alicia J. Augello-Cook on January 25, 1981 in Harlem, New York. She is a recording artist, R&B musician and nine-time Grammy Award winner.
As a teenager, Keys attended the Professional Performing Arts School and made her television debut in 1985 as a sleep-over guest on The Cosby Show. Accepted to Columbia University, Keys declined to go to pursue her musical career. She signed a demo deal with the Columbia Records distributed label So So Def. Her first single, which she co-wrote was entitled “Dah Dee Dah (Sexy Thing)” which was released on the Men in Black soundtrack. She moved to Clive Davis’ Artista Records shortly after which unfortunately disbanded not long after. She continued her professional relationship with Davis at his next venture, J Records and recorded songs that were included on the soundtracks to Shaft and Doctor Doolittle 2. Her debut album was released in 2001 and called “Songs in a Mirror” and subsequently went on to sell over 10 million copies. “Songs in the Mirror” went on to have several top ten hits and won Keys five Grammy Awards in 2002.
Her next album, “The Diary of Alicia Keys” was released in 2003 and debuted at number one in the US. That album garnered her four additional Grammy Awards at that year’s ceremony.
In 2005, Keys taped her installment of MTV’s Unplugged performance series and released the album in October of that year. The album contained new arrangements of previously recorded songs as well as a cover of Aretha Franklin’s “Every Little Bit Hurts”. “Unbreakable” became the lead single. It received four Grammy Award nominations but didn’t win an award.
Her last album As I Am was begun in 2006 and not released until the following year. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and became Keys’ fourth consecutive number one album, and has the most consecutive number one debuts on the Billboard 200 by a female artist, a title she shares with Britney Spears.
She continues to record in her own studio in Long Island New York and has appeared in a number of films including The Nanny Diaries and Smokin’ Aces. Shewill be appearing in several upcoming films, including The Secret Life of Bees, based on the bestselling novel.
