Commonly known as simply, Beyoncé, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born in Houston, Texas, on September 4, 1981. She is a singer/songwriter, recording artist, actress, and record producer.
Knowles was entered into and won her first talent show at the age of seven. Singing
John Lennon’s “Imagine”, she brought the house down. A year later, Knowles and her cousin
Kelly Rowland joined a girl group, Gyrl’s Time and the dance/rap group toured nationally to some acclaim. Gyrl’s Time cut an album and debuted on Star Search, a talent reality show that was huge in the 1980s. Gyrl’s Time fared badly on the show and Knowles admits now that it was her first real set back.
In 1993, the group change its name to
Destiny’s Child (the name was taken from a biblical reference) and after four years of touring, was signed by Columbia Records late in 1997. Their first song, “Killing Time” was used on the soundtrack for the hit move
Men in Black. The following year brought their debut self-titled album that captured three Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards.
Their next album,
The Writing’s on the Wall was released in 1999 and went multi-platinum and features many of their hits including: “Bills, Bills, Bills”, “Say My Name” and “Jumpin’ Jumpin’”. As the 2001
Grammy Awards, “Say My Name” won both Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals as well as Best R&B Song. The album went on to sell over seven million copies. Destiny’s Child had finally made it.
There were some changes in the Destiny’s Child line up with two members leaving the group. Their next album, “Independent Women Part I” was released amongst law suits by former members and a lot of cat fighting back and forth. By the time the third album was released,
Survivor, the acrimony resurfaced and more lawsuits were filed. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the US and has gone on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide. The lawsuits were settled a year later. The group’s holiday recording,
8 Days of Christmas prompted the group to break up with each member going their own ways to pursue solo careers.
Her acting career was started with a made-for-television film with
Mekhi Phifer for MTV, called
Carmen: A Hip Hopera, a modern reworking of Bizet’s legendary opera, Carmen. She became a movie star when cast as Foxy Cleopatra opposite
Mike Myers in
Austin Powers in Goldmember. 2003 brought the comedy,
The Fighting Temptation, which placed her on the screen with the Oscar winning actor,
Cuba Gooding Jr., and in 2006, she played Xenai in the remake of
The Pink Panther opposite
Steve Martin, which was universally panned by critics and audiences alike. She is probably best known as an actress for her role in the film adaptation of Broadway’s
Dreamgirls (which puts Beyonce in the company of
Jamie Foxx,
Eddie Murphy,
Danny Glover, and red-hot newcomer
Jennifer Hudson) in which she was nominated for two
Golden Globe Awards. The film went on to win two Oscars at the 2007
Academy Awards.
Knowles has recorded with
50 Cent,
Jay-Z, the late
Luther Vandross, the rapper
Amil and
Missy Elliot.
Beyoncé’s debut solo album, Dangerously in Love was released in June 2003 and debuted at number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 list. Her first single, “Crazy in Love” featured rapper Jaz-Z, who went on to marry Beyoncé in a secret ceremony in the spring of 2008. The album won four Grammy Awards in 2004.
The same year marked the reuniting of Destiny’s Child and their album
Destiny Fulfilled was released late in the year but they simply couldn’t stay together and announced that they were splitting up again. They released a compilation album,
#1s a greatest hits package and were named the world’s best selling female group of all time.
Her latest solo work,
BDay was released on her 25th birthday in September of 2006 and has been certified three times platinum. Her collaboration with Jay-Z continued with the single “Ring the Alarm” and that year the album garnered one Grammy Award (the album was nominated for five awards).
Knowles has signed heavy endorsement deals with Pepsi, Tommy Hilfiger perfumes and L’Oreal. She continues to be a force in the American R&B scene and is slated for upcoming film projects.
