Fernando José Torres Sanz was born in Madrid Spain on the 20th of March, 1984. He is a professional soccer player, currently playing for Liverpool as a striker.

He is probably best known for a combination of his prowess on the field and his good looks, making him one of the most popular players in the world. His athletic career began when he started playing soccer at the age of 7. At the age of 10, he scored 55 goals during the season, which gave him the opportunity to trial with Atlético Madrid. He joined the club at age 11 in 1995.

Torres went on to play for Madrid and competed in the Nike Cup Europe against other youth teams from across Europe. His team won the cup and Torres was named leading player. Later that year, Torres was named Youth Player of the Year. He continued his youth career with the club, but suffered a setback with a broken leg in the 2000-2001 season. The team won the 2002 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship and he ended that season as the tournament’s leading scorer and best player. The following season, Torres was made captain of the team.

In 2006, Torres played for the Spanish national team at the World Cup and was offered the chance to play for Chelsea. He turned them down, but speculation about where he would be transferred reached near frenzy until it was finally announced that Torres would be signed by Liverpool and in July of 2007, Torres bade farewell to his Madrid fans and moved across the channel. The transfer fee was estimated at £26 million.

Dubbed “El Nino”, Torres made his debut with Liverpool in a game against Aston Villa. He was shortlisted this year for the illustrious PFA Player of the Year. He has played for the Spanish national team since 2003.
