Rihanna shot to stardom with the release of her debut Album, Music of the Sun on August 30, 2005. Her first single from that album, “Pon de Replay” reached #2 on the Billboard Top 100 as well as the UK Singles chart. The album never received critical success, scoring just 2 1/2 stars out of 5 by Rolling Stone magazine but reached commercial success by hitting the Top 10 in both the US and Canada, hitting gold and finally platinum around the world. The second and third singles barely made a blip on the American charts. She did promote the album by opening for Gwen Stefani which most likely contributed to the high record sales in North America.

Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on February 16, 1988 in Saint Michael Barbados, she made her big break at age 15 when one of her friends introduced her to influential music producer Evan Rogers, who was on vacation in Barbados at the time. Rogers and his partner Carl Sturken helped Rihanna produce a demo tape that was sent out to recording companies including Def Jam Recordings and Jay-Z who eventually signed her.

Rihanna’s brand of Caribbean influenced girl pop that evokes hot and steamy nights was just what the music doctor ordered. Her second album, A Girl Like Me, released just 8 months later, debuted in April 2006 at number 5 in the US and number 4 in the UK. The first single, “SOS”, became Rihanna’s first number one hit and was used in an endorsement deal with Nike. In total, four singles hit the charts from the album as well as endorsement deals from Clinique and Secret.

Subsequent to A Girl Like Me, Rihanna made her acting debut in a cameo role in the summer of 2006 with Bring It On: All or Nothing and debuted on the small screen with appearances in All My Children and the drama Las Vegas.

Her third album, co-produced by the likes of Ne-Yo, Stargate and Timbaland was released in early summer 2007 and titled, Good Girl Gone Bad. Featuring Jay-Z and Ne-Yo as artists, and Justin Timberlake, who wrote and provided background vocals on “Rehab”, the album also had three songs produced by Timbaland. Less than two months after the album was released, it went platinum in the US. The initial single, “Umbrella” featured Jay-Z and was the number 1 single in the UK for 10 consecutive weeks. Other singles include, “Shut Up and Drive”, and club favorites “Don’t Stop The Music” and “Breakin Dishes”.

Awards include a 2008 Grammy for “Umbrella” (she was nominated for 6 awards), American Music Award for Favorite Female Artist – Soul/R&B, A People’s Choice Award for best R&B song, “Shut Up and Drive” and four Barbados Music Awards. She has been named the new face of COVERGIRL and is currently on tour promoting A Girl Like Me.
