Schooling Washington

Does Angelina Jolie ever quit? On Tuesday, she sat on a panel at the Washington Club in D.C. to discuss “Iraq, Education, and Children of Conflict.” Zahara’s adoptive mom lobbied for better Iraqi schools, or any at all, at this point. She urged the need to get some stability and normalcy back into the uprooted kids’s lives.

"The best way to heal children of conflict from trauma is to have them focus on their future. We need these kids to rebuild their country, to stabilize their country, and eventually to lead their country." Jolie said.

It’s always strange to hear people call Jolie a wacko. What’s nuts about providing education? Seems like a pretty fundamental, conservative, family value. She’s also come down in favor of President Bush’s surge, saying that increased American presence in Iraq has made humanitarian aid there possible.

“I would think that even Petraeus would agree that the surge does not just mean it works if you get numbers of violence down. It works if humanitarian aid is starting to increase and changes are able to be made,” said Jolie.

Still people have a chip on her shoulder when it comes to her. Maybe because she has a habit of pointing out uncomfortable truths. At Tuesday’s conference, she noted that the U.S. took in 374 Iraqis in January, 444 in February, and 751 in March in spite of the country’s pledge to take in 12,000.

That kind of common sense can be embarrassing.
