‘Fool’s Gold’ made its UK premiere Thursday at London’s Vue West End. Those of us on this side of the pond would like to extend our apologies.
The film stars Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson as a recently divorced couple who embark on a treasure hunt with a billionaire, Donald Sutherland, and his spoiled daughter, Alexis Dziena. It’s supposed to be ‘Romancing the Stone’ meets ‘National Treasure.’
The result, unfortunately, is more like ‘The English Patient’ meets NyQuil. How director Andy Tennant managed to make a boring action movie is beyond me. Even the worst ones have some good fight and chase scenes. Until now.
The climax seems to drag on forever. A moped chase. Falling off cliffs. By this point, I no longer cared whether the couple found the treasure, got back together, or ended up lost forever. Actually, I take that back. I was kind of rooting for that last thing.
Even McConaughey and Hudson’s hot bodies begin to pall after awhile. It was shifting in my seat before the second act. No technical manual has so much exposition.
How does a film with all of this talent go so wrong? Tennant did a wonderful job with ‘Hitch.’ And McConaughey, Hudson, and Sutherland are all brilliant actors. Just look at those smiles at the premiere. You’d never know they’re just dying inside.
