Billie Awards

The air at the Beverly Hilton was thick with the scent of Old Spice on Tuesday evening as the Women’s Sports Foundation held its first annual Billie awards. Named for the organization’s founder, tennis legend Billie Jean King, the awards honor positive representations of women’s sports in media. Oops, I guess I’d better cut that Old Spice joke before this goes live. Don’t want Billie Jean to beat up on me like she did Bobby Riggs.

USA Today sports columnist Christine Brennan took home the journalism honor. HBO’s “Dare to Dream: The Story of the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team” won in the entertainment category, and Jane Gottesman and Geoffrey Biddle, co-curators of the traveling exhibit "Game Face: What Does a Female Athlete Look Like?" took home the Breakthrough & Innovation Billie.

There were plenty of entertainment and sports celebs on hand, too. “Desperate Housewives” Marcia Cross and James Denton, three-time Olympic medalist Brandi Chastain, Penny Marshall, Maria Shriver, Peggy Flemming, Sharon Stone and Laila Ali served as presenters.

The evening was capped off by Ms. King’s friend Sir Elton John whose piano was his only accompaniment for “Your Song,” “Daniel,” and “Philadelphia Freedom,” which was rumored to be have been written for the iconic tennis star. Contrary to popular legend, Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean” was not.
