‘Idol’ Gooses Cook

It was just a matter of time. Kristy Lee Cook finally got a well- deserved boot in her perky, countrified derrière. Never mind that her rendition of Mariah Carey’s “Forever” was probably her best performance so far. She needed to go. She managed to prolong the inevitable with songs about patriotism and god, but fortunately for us, the Carey catalog lacks such beauty pageant sentiment.

Most of the performances this week fell into the good-yet-unremarkable category. Seventeen-year-old David Archuletta was the exception, resting comfortably in the familiar heartfelt ballad zone with “When You Believe.”

Other standout performances included David Cook’s noir-rock “Always Be My Baby” and John Castro’s island acousticized “I Don’t Wanna Cry.” Cook’s was remarkable because it was interesting and original. Castro’s was remarkable because it was bland.

Judge Randy Jackson was spot-on when he said it sounded like some distant “weird beach luau.” He spoke my own thoughts when he said he didn’t get it. Castro has no power, limited range, and one trick. One boring trick.

Not to mention his dreadlocks. When Mariah went in for her signature A-frame hug with Castro, all I could think was, I hope she’s got some Purell in that purse. Because those dirty little things just look nasty.

Next week, the kids take on Andrew Lloyd Webber. My only regret is that we won’t get to see Cook yodel, “What’s New, Buenos Aires?”
