Mariah Carey certainly seems to have put behind her whatever that whole breakdown thing was all about. “E=MC2,” her second release since “Glitter" -- the disastrous CD/movie one-two punch that knocked her into an emotional tailspin -- sold 154,000 units in its first day on Thursday.
The Grammy-winner was on hand at Universal City Walk Thursday in Los Angeles signing copies of the new CD. The album’s title is a tongue- in-cheek nod to the formula that was successful on her comeback release “The Emancipation of Mimi.”
Having more than proven her five-octave range, Carey now takes a subdued approach to her music, foregoing the vocal acrobatics of her early career. (Although we will never forgive her for her role in the creation of that monster Christina Aguilera.) Like the similarly big- voiced k.d. lang’s new release “Watershed,” “E=MC2” is more effective because of its softness and restraint.
While Carey’s whispery, more sexually provocative tracks may elicit comparisons to Janet Jackson, you know that Miss Mariah holds back because she wants to, not because she has to.
Carey has also scaled down her voluptuous figure. She recently revealed that she can now fit into her high school jeans. Aguilera has her beat on that score, though. EVERYONE fit into her high school jeans.
