Dempsey ‘Honor’-ably Leaving ‘Grey’s’?

Just when you thought ’27 Dresses’ and ‘Kiss the Bride’ had driven the ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ idea into the ground, out pops McDreamy in the Julia Roberts role.

His upcoming release ‘Made of Honor’ held its celebrity screening in London Monday. Patrick Dempsey plays a guy who doesn’t realize he’s in love with his best friend (Michelle Monaghan) until she’s engaged to someone else. He agrees to be her “maid” of honor so that he can break up the wedding and marry her himself.

Let’s all agree that this is the last one of these. Anyone working on a similar idea please stop now. Perhaps you can hitch a ride on Kanye West’s spaceship in search of creativity.

Interestingly, ‘Honor’ was Dempsey’s Plan B. He wasn’t quite sure that ‘Enchanted’ would work. So he chose something that had already worked several times before, it seems. Perhaps he didn’t count on ‘Grey’s’ co-star (and budding movie star) Katherine Heigl coming out with a better version of the same story five months earlier.

Dempsey has been making noises about launching a film career of his own, dropping hints that he may not stay on with ‘Grey’s’ when his six- year contract expires. I’m not sure that’s such a good idea. He’s cute, but he’s no George Clooney. Dempsey doesn’t have that sparkle.

Plus, he gives the impression that he’s practically entitled to a film career. Nothing sucks the sexy out of an actor more than when he’s acting like he’s too good for TV. ‘Grey’s’ is a good show, and he’s lucky to be on it.

I think he has a touch of David Caruso-itis. He should appreciate that at 42, he’s finally got a regular gig.
