Shakira Shakes Hips For Education

“Whenever, Wherever” singer Shakira chose Tuesday, Washington, D.C., to raise awareness for the Education for All Act.

Known for her truth-talking hips, the Latin pop star spoke the more conventional way in a conference on the Global Campaign for Education with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and World Bank President Robert Zoelick. The campaign aims to have every child in the world in school by 2015.

“Seventy-two million kids are not in the school system,” the singer told CNN.

Shakira, a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, has been a champion of education since starting her own foundation ten years ago. Last year, she donated $45 million dollars to causes in Latin America.

The buzz over the conference caused the media to ponder whether we are on celebrity do-gooder overload. With George Clooney in Darfur, Bono in Africa, and Angelina Jolie helping refugees everywhere, are Shakira’s efforts really necessary?

All I can say is that anyone who could even come up with such a question is a heartless moron. I guess that Shakira should just ignore seventy-two million kids because the media has the attention span of a Jack Russell Terrier on meth? Maybe she should start a foundation to educate reporters about compassion.
