I love stuff like this. Mischa Barton said in a Wednesday press conference to promote her latest film ‘Closing the Ring’ that she had no problem being nude in it.
"Giving herself to Teddy, it's not your average sex scene,” says Barton. “The nudity is about her innocence. There is something tragic and heartbreaking about it.”
I know exactly what she’s up to. ‘Closing’ has been getting deservedly terrible buzz at the festivals, so the filmmakers have trotted Barton out the talk up the film’s finer points. The ones beneath her blouse.
It’s not a bad strategy. They really are the best thing in the film. Which is sort of shocking, considering it’s directed by double Oscar-winner Richard Attenborough and stars Oscar-winner Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer.
Even these fine talents have difficulty getting anything out of the melodramatic material. MacLaine, who is usually so good at playing crotchety and likable, is just sour. And Plummer seems to have forgotten subtlety. Perhaps he thought this was a comedy.
I think I’m onto something. Maybe in the next press conference, they could market this thing as a farce.
