Downey: Iron Babe

‘Iron Man’ continues to tease by premiering everywhere but in my neighborhood. The film starring Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, and Jeff Bridges already screened in Australia and Mexico. Thursday was the UK Charity premiere. I guess those of us who love mom and eat apple pie (don’t mix them up) will have to wait until May 2 to see the real thing in the flesh.

And do I mean flesh. From the look of his superhero wifebeater-tee, inmate #P50522 has been hitting the weight room pretty hard. Downey never looked so good. So comfortable in his bodyfatless skin. It’s a transformation almost as startling and sexy as Ed Norton in ‘American History X.’

Downey brings a lot to the role of Tony Stark, which is why director Jon Favreau fought for him. He wanted to make something better than the standard action movie.

"Robert offered the opportunity to play the type of humor that I like, the improvisation sort of feel to the material, and of course, he helped attract the wonderful cast,” said Favreau.

He also brought a lot of baggage. The studio was wary of risking its $186 million project on a potentially unreliable and unbankable star.

"There was tremendous apprehension at the time, understandably so," Favreau remembers. "His off-screen persona and on-screen body of work were going to define this role in many ways, and that could have been something that was rejected or something parents were not going to be comfortable with.”

If initial reaction to the film is any indication, the risk seems to have paid off. ‘Iron Man’ could send Downey’s career trajectory higher than ever.

But first things first. Open the darned thing already.
