Tribeca: Snow Gets Help ‘Finding Amanda’

Brittany Snow tosses a little schmutz on her squeaky-clean image, co- starring with Matthew Broderick in the dark comedy ‘Finding Amanda,’ which premiered at Tribeca on Tuesday.

Snow seems to be making a concerted effort to shake the good girl image she, perhaps unintentionally, created in projects like ‘American Dreams’ and ‘Hairspray.’ Later this year, she appears in the seedy gun trafficking drama ‘Black Water Transit.’ In ‘Amanda,’ she plays a drug-addicted hooker.

Matthew Broderick plays her TV producer uncle who is charged with tracking her down and convincing her to go into rehab. But he has his own problems. He’s an alcoholic compulsive gambler. So naturellement, he finds her in Las Vegas.

Why is it that any time an actress wants to change her image, she goes straight for the hooker role? First of all, it’s really unfair to hookers to portray them constantly in a negative light. I’m sure that there are at least one or two who chose the profession because they simply like working with people.

Secondly, playing a prostitute is kind of a cop out, in the way that an actress appearing without makeup is an instant way to telegraph that she’s taken on a serious role. It lessens the need for the actress actually to act. The makeup and costume do 90% of the work.

Not that I’m knocking Snow’s performance. But for her next project, she might have a bit more luck convincing us that she has acting chops if she picks something a little less obvious and a little more challenging.
