‘Iron Man’ Rocks

Robert Downey, Jr. doesn’t need a metal suit to be flying high. Director Jon Favreau made exactly the right choice for the lead in ‘Iron Man,’ which premiered Wednesday in Hollywood.
Downey turns what is basically just another superhero origin story into something completely engrossing. His swagger and attitude are the perfect counterpoint to self-effacing good guys like Tobey Maguire’s Spiderman. All that real-life negative baggage that Downey carries into the film feeds into the character of Tony Stark, a fast-living, self-indulgent billionaire who suddenly finds purpose in his life.
Also fun is Stark’s sidekick Pepper Potts, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. (Who’s a mom, by the way, if you’ve been living under a rock.) The film also stars Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges.
Ordinarily, the amount of build-up ‘Iron Man’ has received would lead to an inevitable let down. Fortunately, rumors of Downey’s triumphant return have not been greatly exaggerated. The film totally delivers.
