People Magazine reveals its 2008 list of the 100 Most Beautiful People on Friday, and Kate Hudson graces the cover. I hate these things.
It’s just so shallow. Sure, the magazine claims that it’s trying to expand the concept of beauty by including older people like Raquel Welch or Julianne Moore. But let’s get real, as Dr. Phil might say. Those women are stunning for any age. Where’s Estelle Getty?
Then the mag will point to those whose beauty is “not classic” like Sarah Silverman, Tina Fey, Kelly Osbourne, and Pink. Which is a backhanded way of saying, “We’ve got some real onions, too.”
Even more insulting is that they’ve only included three of the four ‘Desperate Housewives.’ How rude is that?
Even a cursory glance at the list proves that this is all about surface beauty: Jessica Alba, Christina Aguilera, Halle Berry, Miley Cyrus, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Matthew McConaughey, Taylor Swift, Jason Taylor, Carrie Underwood, and the entire cast of ‘Gossip Girl.’ All gorgeous.
If People really wanted to punch holes in the Cult of Beauty, why not change the name of the list? Call it what it is. The 100 Most Popular People. Or even more accurate, The 100 People We Think Will Sell Our Magazine.
