‘Vegas’ Comfortably Predictable

There’s something to be said for knowing what you are and making the most of it. That’s exactly what ‘What Happens In Vegas’ does. It hits all the right beats right on time, gives you a few chuckles, never taxes the old brain too much, and leaves you feeling good. Not to mention that stars Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz are staggeringly attractive. In other words, it’s the perfect date movie.

The film premiered Thursday in Los Angeles and also stars Queen Latifah, Dennis Miller, Dennis Farina, Treat Williams, Lake Bell, and Rob Corddry.

Cameron plays Joy, a stuffed-shirt commodities trader who just lost a boyfriend. Kutcher is Jack, a freewheeling ne’er-do-well whose father (Williams) just fired him. Both go to Vegas to drown their sorrows, meet cute, get toasted that night, and wake up married the next morning.

According to formula, they hate each other. Also according to formula, fate forces them together. At the very moment they call it quits, Jack wins $3 million with Joy’s quarter. (Their names already sound darling together, don’t they?) A hard line judge (Miller) refuses to annul their marriage, freezes their winnings, and forces them to six-months of hard togetherness.

You know what comes next. They harass one another, try to wheedle the cash away, recruit their wacky sidekicks, etc. Latifah does a nice turn as a marriage counselor. Then just as the divorce is pending, they may not want one anymore.

I find this kind of predictability soothing. It’s nice to turn the brain off every once in awhile and zone out. Director Tom Vaughan keeps the movie clipping along at a nice pace. There are funny moments. It doesn’t try too hard or say anything deep or meaningful. Diaz and Kutcher are sparkly and adorable. It’s the equivalent of chicken soup or Mom’s tuna casserole. Cinematic comfort food.
