Lucy Liu has been getting slammed in all directions for branching out into “art.” As if acting weren’t already an art form. Granted, ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and ‘Cashmere Mafia’ are of dubious merit, but it does take talent to pull off that kind of thing. Her latest exhibition of paintings opened Thursday in Munich.
Critics fail to mention that she’s been donating the proceeds to UNICEF. She raised almost three-hundred grand a couple of years ago from just one showing. Do you know what that kind of money can do?
She’s helped get clean drinking water to kids in Africa and to alleviate the AIDS/HIV crisis. She went to the Congo to work with kids who’ve been displaced and survived sexual violence. Okay, maybe designing for Hello Kitty wasn’t the best idea, but it did raise money to put more girls in school.
The point is, Liu’s heart is in the right place. So even if you think her work looks like something you’d buy at the gas station parking lot, she deserves respect. Put a lid on it and think of the children.
