Theron Bemoans Fluff

Charlize Theron threw a curve ball at fans in the new issue of W magazine. Frustrated by the lack of meaty prospects and the lackluster box office of her last film ‘In the Valley of Elah,’ she says that audiences only want fluff.

The Oscar-winner was at the Christian Dior Cruise 2009 Collection at Gustavino's in New York City on Monday, where she sat in the company of Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Antony.

“It’s not necessarily Hollywood’s fault,” she said. “People don’t go to see these movies. I think it’s a bigger problem. We’ve become completely fluff obsessed.”

I don’t necessarily agree with that. There’s a whole season for serious film. It’s called, “Christmas.” The problem is that a lot of serious films stink. A lot of not so serious ones stink, too, but there’s all kinds of stuff blowing up to keep you from noticing. At least you get some entertainment value.

But when a serious film is bad, it’s endless and unendurable. That’s why people are less apt to risk $15 on it. When you’re not sure about a movie, special effects win out over fine acting every time.

The next time Theron comes across a project like ‘In the Valley of Elah,’ she needs to stick on a natural disaster or alien invasion or something at the end so that people will come out of the theater saying, “The first part was kind of slow, but did you see that volcano come out of the ground and swallow up Susan Sarandon? That was awesome!”
