Vegas got it right. Syesha Mercado is off ‘American Idol.’ Next week’s final will be a Battle of the Davids: Cook vs. Archuleta. But we already knew that.
Sports books had Mercado at 15/1 odds versus 2/3 for Cook and 7/5 for Archuleta. Archuleta’s Disney-fied appeal has made him the favorite since Idol immemorial. Or at least since the beginning of this season. This was the first week the odds were in Cook’s favor.
So while the poor contestants had to wait before Ryan Seacrest could tell us what we already knew, we all wasted an hour watching them visit their hometowns. So they can get keys to the city, have the day named after them, and basically get to gloat in front of all the losers who kicked sand in their faces.
David Cook went to Kansas City, Missouri, where he played three separate venues. The last one was completely sold-out, which is understandable since it was in Blue Springs, the suburb where Cook grew up.
Thousands of screaming girls fought their way through Murray, Utah for a glimpse of Archuleta, who is still a junior in high school there. ‘Idol’s’ resident Rainman was characteristically eloquent about the whole thing.
“Wow,” he said. And later, “Gosh.”
Aruchuleta’s father is rumored to have caused a little fracas of his own this week. After weeks of alleged interference that would have embarrassed even Mama Rose, Jeff Archuleta was reportedly banned from backstage.
The story goes that Papa Archuleta insisted on adding a verse from Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls" to "Stand by Me," which would have caused ‘Idol’ to pay additional royalties. That, apparently, was the last straw.
Syesha Mercado spent her day in Bradenton, Florida, where Mayor Wayne Poston urged the crowd to vote and vote for her until they couldn’t move their fingers. Unfortunately, those votes weren’t enough to turn Mercado’s luck around.
Word on the street is that Cook maintains the odds over Archuleta. But I wouldn’t take that bet.
