Does it make any sense at all to review a kids’ cartoon? Is little Zoe going to care if ‘Kung Fu Panda’ only gets two-and-a-half stars? You’re going whether you like it or not.
You’ll probably like it, if that makes you feel better. The film premiered at Cannes on Thursday. You won’t enjoy it as much as you enjoyed ‘Shrek’ I, II, and III, but it won’t be agony either. Unless you can’t stand Jack Black. Then it’ll be agony.
Black is at his over-the-toppiest, which works in this kind of film. He plays Po, an oafish, tubby panda who’s picked to be the new Dragon Warrior by the ancient turtle sage (Randall Duk Kim) over the much more qualified Furious Five: Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Viper (Lucy Liu), Crane (David Cross) and Mantis (Seth Rogen).
The Dragon Warrior must fight and overcome Tai Lung (Ian McShane), a kung fu master who went over to the Dark Side he was passed over for the same title long ago. So Po must train with wolf Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) for the inevitable battle.
You know what’s in store. The film isn’t as funny as it could be or contain many surprises, but it’s watchable. Adults will probably find their attention wandering to the beautiful scenery, which is inspired by Asian art and animation. It’s really beautiful.
Your rugrats will love the action and the talking animals, unless they’re precociously jaded by formula. They’ll be glad you took ‘em. And you won’t be terribly unhappy that you did either.
