Joaquin & Gwyneth: ‘Two Lovers’

‘Two Lovers’ bowed at Cannes on Monday, and while it may not be this year’s Palme d’Or, Joaquin Phoenix is certainly in the running for best actor. Although he’d be an absentee winner. The actor didn’t make it to the South of France this year.

Phoenix plays a man who moves back into his parents’ Brooklyn apartment in Brooklyn after a major break up. In order to help him get over it, they fix him up with Sandra (Vinessa Shaw) the daughter of a family friend. Then enter Michelle (Gwyneth Paltrow), the new neighbor, a confused woman who’s being kept by her married lover. Who do you think he’ll fall for?

So maybe the film’s setup is a little predictable. The love triangle thing isn’t exactly fresh. But Phoenix’s performance is so layered and subtle. He makes the movie.

It was also rumored Monday that Phoenix is working on an album with British group The Charlatans. After having discovered his musical side on ‘Walk the Line,’ he decided to pursue music. The CD is expected later this year.
