Eddie Murphy Retreads Axel

Break out the Ben-Gay, here comes another geriatric action hero. Following in Harrison Ford’s footsteps, Eddie Murphy is resurrecting his own eighties film franchise. Murphy is set to star in another installment of ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’

Apparently Murphy, like Ford, approached the studio with the idea. But I think Axel Foley’s fourth outing will hold up better than Indiana Jones’ for a couple of reasons.

For one, the two ‘Cop’ sequels weren’t nearly as good or as successful as the original (one of the best action pics of all time, in my book). Where the first three Indy movies maintained the same level of quality, ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ got progressively worse. In fact, the last one kind of tanked. So Murphy has less to live up to.

Then there’s the difference in character. Indy is a true action hero, swinging from vines, rescuing damsels in distress, obliterating the Nazi party -- the usual stuff archaeologists do.

Axel, on the other hand, uses his wits. And his wit. He only uses his fists when absolutely necessary. Much easier for a 50-something- year-old to pull off. So I’m looking forward to the next ‘Beverly Hills Cop.’

And in a related item, rumor has it Jane Fonda is set to star in ‘Barbarella II: Heatflash!’
