As global warming heats up and the planet becomes more unpredictable, I hope that we can all be as blasé as the people in Los Angeles. While an inferno raged through Universal’s back lot -- devouring New York street, the ‘Back to the Future’ set, and ‘King Kong,’ and threatening Wisteria Lane and the Ghost Whisperer’s old haunts, the 2008 MTV Movie Awards went on nary a hop, skip and fire break away.
Maybe that’s because the awards are just too cool for their own good. They used to be fun and silly. Fans voted. Winners got a tub of golden popcorn. But last night’s show was a bit too hip, too inside, and too impressed with its own brilliance.
Seth Rogan and James Franco joked about smoking dope. How original. (They also got flack later and blamed MTV for allegedly writing the material.) The new category they presented, Best Summer Movie So Far, was trying so hard to be clever. I think the writers need to be slapped.
So does Adam Sandler. His “acceptance song” for the MTV Generation Award, a take off of “Nobody Does It Better” saluting his own achievement, was about three minutes and thirty seconds too long. You’d think twenty years in comedy would give him some clue as to when to edit a joke. Then again, compared to a two-hour SNL sketch about a cerebrally challenged water boy, last night’s performance was downright pithy.
The show was also hiply unapologetic (or so the writers must have thought) about being a vehicle for blatant plugs. Host Mike Meyers started things off by “pimping” his own upcoming movie. He was followed by a parade of presenters, like Ed Norton, Will Farrell, and Sarah Jessica Parker, whose current projects are in theaters now or are coming soon.
The only funny moments came during a revival of ‘Wayne’s World’ with Meyer’s and SNL pal Dana Carvey. But it, too, felt largely forced.
The entire evening, in fact, landed a little flat. Not hip. Not edgy. And all too self-satisfied. Rather than trying to be so cool, perhaps the producers might have taken a suggestion from the scene outside and added a little heat.
