Aussies Remember Heath Ledger

On Thursday, Australians in Film took a moment out of the 2008 Breakthrough Awards to honor Heath Ledger by establishing the Heath Ledger Scholarship Fund. He was an Ambassador for the AiF, which was founded to celebrate the work of Australian film and TV makers.

Org president Susie Dobson said, “We are thrilled that we will be able to assist burgeoning Australian talent launch their careers in the States to become potential future recipients of a Breakthrough Award."

Which made me stop for a moment. For such a small country -- populationarily speaking, it’s about half of California -- it sure has a lot of star power. Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Geoffrey Rush, Mel Gibson, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Kylie Minogue, Eric Bana...

All Aussies. Is this a plot to make us all say “g’day” and eat vegemite sandwiches? It’s like the country is slowly taking over Hollywood by sending all of these outrageously attractive, charismatic people. And you know what? I’m falling for it.

The latest two co-conspirators were Abbie Cornish, who starred with Ryan Philippe in ‘Stop-Loss,’ and Mia Wasikowska, who’s currently filming ‘Amelia’ with Hilary Swank, Richard Gere, and Ewan McGregor. Both actresses took home the AiF Golden Boomerang. All the better to snare the rest of us with that Down Under magnetism, I suppose.
