‘Kit Kittredge’ Puts It Together

Buzz in the industry is that Picturehouse Entertainment may have lost its mind releasing a small, girl-oriented film like ‘Kit Kittredge: An American Girl’ against potential powerhouses like ‘Hancock’ starring Will Smith and Pixar’s ‘Wall-E.’ But everyone might just be in for a surprise. The film premiered Saturday in Los Angeles.

‘Kit Kittredge’ has a lot going for it. It’s based on Mattel’s American Girl doll series. Each doll is from a different era in American history and stars in a series of novels. There’s a tomboy from Colonial Williamsburg, an African-American slave girl during the Civil War, and a New Mexican girl growing up on a nineteenth century rancho. Kit is a plucky Depression Era girl whose family goes from privilege to taking in boarders.

For those who don’t have a young daughter, AG’s are like crack. But way, way, way more expensive. Once a girl gets her hands on one, she has to have them all. Plus every book that goes with them. You will not be able to keep your daughter away from this movie.

Plus, the film stars Abigail Breslin, which sent our Zoe into paroxysms of joy. The film also stars Chris O’Donnell, Julia Ormond, Stanley Tucci, Jane Krakowski, and Joan Cusack -- a cast quite capable of supporting Ms. Breslin.

Then there’s the fact that this is a good little film. It doesn’t shy away at all from the harsher realities of a tanking economy, which is refreshing. It’s also well timed, considering the current state of affairs in the U.S. Neighbors losing their houses, the plight of the homeless, and testy, money-stressed adults are all presented in a way that’s accessible for kids without being condescending.

Good word-of-mouth, a star with kid appeal, and a recognizable brand may slip ‘Kit Kittredge’ right into the pocket, proving that girls can power a film into profits.
