Apparently, Eddie Murphy can’t look himself in the eye over ‘Meet Dave.’ The star was a no show at last night’s premiere in Westwood. Murphy, who has been quoted that he wants to get out of making movies and go back to stand-up, was curiously said to be shooting another movie, ‘A Thousand Words.’
He left the embarrassment up to co-stars Elizabeth Banks, Gabrielle Union, Ed Helms, and Scott Caan. All were awkwardly putting a positive spin on things, gushing about their excitement over working with the MIA Murphy and studiously avoiding the subject of the film itself.
With good reason. Murphy reteamed with director Brian Robbins -- who also helmed the disastrous ‘Norbit’ -- on this story of an Eddie Murphy-shaped spaceship inhabited by tiny aliens that crash lands on the Earth. The results are just as bad. Clumsy plotting, minimal comedy, lack of inspiration. Perhaps Murphy was conveniently shooting another film in order to avoid the embarrassment of having to face the rest of his trusting cast.
The studio has been appropriately stingy with screenings. The few critics who’ve gotten a sneak peek have trashed it. And unfortunately, Murphy is no longer review-proof like Will Smith. He can’t rest on his laurels and hope that people will go just because they want to see him. Those days are over.
Going back to stand-up might be the right choice. Maybe he’ll light upon something that’s actually funny.
