Emmys Snub Grey’s, Housewives, And Betty

It appears that like the rest of the country, Emmy has grown tired of ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘Ugly Betty,’ and ‘Desperate Housewives.’ The three series that have dominated the awards (and the ratings) for the past few years didn’t make the cut at Thursday’s nominations announcement in Los Angeles.

It’s way past time. The big networks have played it safe for too long. These series seem innovative on the surface, but they’re basically the same old thing in new packaging. A little voice over, a few radical camera angles, maybe throw in a minority or two, and it gives the appearance of being fresh. But it’s just yesterday’s meat with a new expiration date.

That’s why cable is taking over. HBO and Showtime have been barking at the traditional networks’ heels for awhile, and now that ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Damages’ have hit the radar, basic cable is joining the pack.

With the growth of YouTube and Internet video, the entire concept of a network may soon be a thing of the past. I hope the execs over at ABC, et. al. have been saving their money.

The Emmys are scheduled to air on September 21. The major awards are listed below.
