Karina Outshines Push Play At J-14 “In Tune” Concert

There’s only room for one Jonas Brothers, thank goodness, although their opening act Push Play seem to want Kevin, Joe, and Nick to make a little elbow room. Push Play’s label Def Jam seemed to be making a play to put them at the top of the boy band spot. Push Play headlined at J-14 Magazine’s “In Tune” Summer Concert in NYC on Monday. ‘Hannah Montana’s’ often-overlooked Cody Linley played host.

I didn’t think it possible, but Push Play is an even more watered-down version of the Jonas Brothers’ already watery, sanitized drivel. Over-synthesized, catchy-throated meaningless vocals and karaoke production. Blech.

The real standout is Def Jam’s other emerging artist Karina. This just-turned-17-year-old should have Alicia Keys shaking in her Linea Rossa Wedges. Her moody first single “16 @ War” describes what it’s like growing up in the hood, with old men making passes at her, avoiding drugs, and “no daddies where I’m from... just mad mothers.” Her latest release “Can’t Find the Words” is much more uplifting, about the joy of falling in love.

It’s easy to see why Karina was the prize in a bidding war among Def Jam, Interscope, and Bad Boy Records a few years ago. But I think it was a mistake having Push Play perform with her. Compared to Karina’s immense electricity, the boys can’t even make a spark.
