Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born in Funchal, Madiera Portugal on February 5th, 1985. He has been described as one of the most talented footballer (soccer player) of his generation.
Better known as Cristiano Ronaldo and named after United States President Ronald Reagan whom his father had great respect for, he has quickly become of the sport’s superstar players.
He began his career with Andorinha, an amateur team at the tender age of eight. His skills and reputation began to grow and by his tenth birthday, he was scouted by Madiera’s top two teams, CS Maritimo and CD Nacional. He eventually signed with Nacional which proved to be a stepping stone and he was subsequently signed to Sporting and was enrolled into their “football factory”.
Ronaldo went on to become the only player in the history of the club to play for the Under-16, Under-17 and Under-18 B team and first team within a season. At 16 he started to gain the attention of European football scouts. In 2003, with the transfer of David Beckham to Real Madrid, Manchester United was looking for some new blood. Ronaldo was signed to the club for a reported £ 12.24 million and became United’s first Portuguese player. His current contract will run out with Manchester United in 2010.
Since then, Ronaldo has made a reputation as a hard worker with a bit of a bad temper but that hasn’t stopped him from securing a massive €80 million contract in early April of 2007, making him the highest paid player in United’s history. And that includes David Beckham.
Ronaldo has played for the Portuguese national team since 2002 and represented his home country in the 2004 Summer Olympics.
