Nerds Put Kick Me Sign On “Superhero“

by shindig March 28th 2008

Drake Bell, star of Nickelodeon’s ‘Drake & Josh,’ spoofs ‘Spiderman,’ ‘X-men,’ and just about every other genetically mutated man in Dimension Films ‘Superhero Movie.’

The film’s Hollywood premiere on Thursday was packed, but theaters may not be. Nerds, the film’s core audience, have chosen to boycott it and every other film backed by Harvey Weinstein.

It’s all because of Weinstein’s recut of an entirely different film, ‘Fanboys.’ ‘Fanboys’ is the story of a bunch of nerds who break into George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch to see ‘The Phantom Menace’ on the night of its release. Enough self-reflexive nerd movies to choke an M.I.T. graduate, huh?

Apparently Weinstein didn’t like the subplot where one of the nerds dies. (Oops, spoiler, sorry.) So he reshot those scenes and recut the film. The recut version tested better, so that’s the one chosen for release.

But apparently, nerds enjoy seeing one of their own fall. Fans have organized protests at ‘Superhero Movie’ screenings on both coasts, calling poor Harvey “Darth Weinstein.” The Weinstein Co. offered the bandaid of releasing both versions on DVD.

But the nerds are having none of it. If Weinstein doesn’t get the original cut in theaters soon, they’re going to do something drastic. They’re going to tell his mom.
